The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao absolutely blew me away, so I picked up this book hoping for more coming-of-age brilliance. If I’m honest, it’s not as good as Oscar Wao. Duh. Oscar Wao won Diaz the Pulitzer Price. But neither did it disappoint. If you haven’t read anything from Junot Diaz, read Oscar Wao. And if you loved it, you’ll enjoy Drown, too.
This a rape mystery and a coming-of-age story and a legal thriller and a story about Native American culture. It asks what it means to get justice when the system is incapable of delivering it.
It is also a deep and challenging and compelling story. I really liked it, and it has stayed with me long after I turned the last page.
